HD Sculpture

H. Downs and Sons has had over 16 years experience manufacturing Art castings, with the help of David Bradbury, a local artist and teacher, we want to bring our knowledge to those people whose minds and hands would like to 'have a go' at producing their own sculpture in Cast Iron or Aluminium.

Weekly Format:

Day 1:            Introduction to the company and a brief history.
                       Explanation of the techniques involved and guidance towards your subject matter
                       Hands on drawing/sketching tuition of your finished statue to determine an understanding of the
                       finished form and how your ideas can be achieved

Day 2:            Three dimensional sampling using clay to produce a maquette ( small model ) of your design
                       The instruction of relative sizes and their relationships
                       Preparation of the model and proposed fixings

Day 3:            Instruction to the methods to be used in cutting the polystyrene
                       Demonstration of tools used and finish obtainable.
                       Commencement of sculpting your personal polystyrene block

Day 4: Overseeing and personal instruction of progress
Hints, guides and suggestions

Day 5: Completion of polystyrene sculpture
Initial pre-casting preparation.

After you have gone, the next two weeks will be taken in preparing the polystrene for casting in the metal of your choice either cast iron or aluminium.
They will be then cast, cleaned and transported to your home.
